Heat and Cold Therapy

Ice, heat, and support is the most natural, proven, and effective means of speeding recovery, preventing injury, and stopping pain. Cold therapy will help prevent and reduce swelling, muscle spasms, and pain. Heat therapy increases tissue temperature and blood flow which increases the oxygen and flow of nutrients to the injured tissue and helps facilitate healing.

How and when to apply cold:
Cold therapy will help prevent and reduce swelling, muscle spasms, and pain.

Apply cold to the injured area for at least the first 48 hours following the injury, or until the swelling has abated.

Begin the first cold treatment immediately following the actual injury. The longer the delay between the time of injury and the first cold treatment, the longer the overall recovery period will be.

Keep the cold on the area for 10-20 minutes. 3 However, if the skin begins to feel numb remove the cold (this is different from the "numbness" early on as the cold relieves injury pain).

Repeat the treatment every few hours while awake.

During and between cold treatments in the first 48 hours after injury: keep the injured area wrapped, rest the injury, and keep the injured area elevated.

After the initial 48 hours, continue cold treatment if the swelling persists. If the swelling is controlled, begin heat therapy.

How and when to apply heat:

Heat therapy increases tissue temperature and blood flow which increases
the oxygen and flow of nutrients to the injured tissue and helps facilitate healing.

Heat can make swelling worse and prolong the healing process. Wait until the swelling from the injury has abated before beginning heat therapy.

After the swelling has abated begin heat therapy. Apply heat for approximately 15 minutes every 2 hours while awake.

Activity:
How and When to Apply Compression and Elevation:

During the first 24 hours after injury, wrap the injured area continuously to help limit swelling.

Whenever possible, and especially while sleeping, elevate the injured area to help reduce swelling.
After 1 or 2 days begin exercising the joint gently, without putting weight on it. Physical therapy may be required to regain strength and normal use of the injured area.

If the injury is severe to the point that the injured area cannot move or bear weight normally, if the pain is excessive, or if swelling or bruising increases despite treatment, it is recommended to consult your doctor.

If you have problems or suspect that you may have problems in the blood vessels near the skin because of diabetes or other conditions that can diminish blood flow, check with your doctor before applying cold or heat to the body.
